MORRO BAY, Calif. — Drivers heading between Morro Bay and Cayucos on Sunday, November 1, 2026, should allow extra time: Caltrans says the Morro Bay Triathlon will require the closure of the right-hand (#2) lane of Highway 1 from 8 a.m. until noon to give cyclists a dedicated route.
What drivers should expect
The restriction affects the Highway 1 corridor between Morro Bay and Cayucos, not the entire highway. Caltrans says traffic signals along Highway 1 through Morro Bay will operate as flashing red during the event. Drivers should treat those signals as stop indications, follow instructions from personnel on site, and watch for cyclists and spectators near intersections.
The California Highway Patrol and flaggers are expected to help manage traffic. Caltrans says signs will warn motorists approaching the affected section. Residents planning coastal errands, weekend travel or trips to Cayucos should consider additional travel time, especially during the morning event window.
Why the lane is being reserved
The triathlon’s cycling segment uses the coastal corridor. The reserved lane is intended to separate competitors from ordinary traffic. Caltrans describes the event as drawing participants and spectators from both the local community and beyond.
The announced schedule is a plan, not a real-time guarantee. Road conditions and event operations can change. Check Caltrans QuickMap before leaving, particularly if traveling between the two communities on Sunday morning.
